The TowansTowans examines the point at which sand-dunes meet the sea. Lost items are made whole by the Towans mysterious ways: a rabbit part eaten by a jack russell, beer cans, an abandoned raincoat filled with driftwood, this is the poetry of the Towans. The subtext of these photographs examine the photographer and his own state of mind and experiences, from the discovery of an attempted suicide in the dunes to the near drowning of the author and through his regular walks across the Towans with his dogs. Hughes often returns to the same locations over several months or years, recording the gradual transformation of the landscape. The local vacinity and its industrialization shaped and made possible our modern day world and global society. This part of Cornwall was one of the main areas where this process began. The progress of industrialization, the distribution of Cornish mining technology and practice lead the way in the export of the Industrial Revolution overseas, and thus played a key role in the growth of the global capitalist economy. | ![]() Gwithian Towans Caravan Park | ![]() Mexico Towans | ![]() Eccy | ![]() Rivermouth | ![]() Plastic Glove | ![]() Hoody at Porthkidney | ![]() Rabbit Mexico Towans |
